NARROWSBURG SEWER DISTRICT

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT

Smoke Testing of the Sanitary Sewer System

Get ready for an unusual sight.

On July 11 and 12, weather permitting, The Narrowsburg Sewer Department will be conducting a survey of the sanitary sewer system. Workers will open manholes and cleanouts to blow non-toxic smoke through the lines to locate breaks and defects in the system.

So don’t be surprised if you see smoke rising from the ground or even from building’s vent stacks.

Don’t worry, it’s non-toxic, harmless, and creates no fire hazard.

Homeowners should be on the lookout for any smoke that enters their home. That’s a clear indication of defective plumbing, a faulty or illegal connection to the sewer system, or that drains have dried up.

This smoke is harmless and leaves no stains and has no ill effects on pets, plants or people. But if it does enter your home during the test, it is a clear sign that dangerous sewer gasses have also been entering your home. Sewer gasses may have no odor and can have long-term adverse health effects. So, this smoke test offers homeowners a valuable warning.

Defects on private property are the responsibility of the owner, and a licensed plumber may need to be consulted.  If smoke gets inside your house, don’t hesitate to contact the department at 845-252-7376 and we will assist you in identifying the source of the smoke.
