Narrowsburg Water and Sewer District Job Descriptions

 

 

Water and Sewer Assistant Operator Trainee responsibilities will include but will not be limited to the following:

  • Perform assigned duties of Water and Sewer Assistant Operator (Assistant Supe1intendent) under direct supervision of ce1iified operator.
  • Complete on-the-job training to become qualified as a Water and Sewer Assistant Operator (Assistant Superintendent).
  • Must satisfactorily complete the requirements for New York State Ce1iification at the appropriate grades for each system operated within the first 18 months of employment.
  • Perforn1s increasingly responsible duties as assigned in the operation and maintenance of the water and sewer systems.
  • Possess a New York State Ce1iification at the appropriate grades for each system. Maintain accurate and neat system operation and maintenance records.
  • Prepare and present oral and written repo1is
  • Physically capable of operating vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record.
  • Physically capable of operating manual labor in all weather conditions.
  • Compute chemical dosages and adjust chemical feed machines for proper treatment. Make necessary process changes as indicated by tests.
  • Maintain equipment, machine1y, and laboratory apparatus in a clean and orderly condition.
  • Operate construction and maintenance equipment including dun1p trucks, tractors, mowers and backhoes.
  • Perform treatment process mathematical computations to determine proper mixture of chemicals, correct chemical amounts and chemical usage.
  • Read and interpret gauges, meters, recording devices, and process change data

 

  • Know expected efficiencies of all unit operations and processes in the treatment, collection and distribution system and how to monitor these units.
  • Obtain water samples and perform tests for Bacte1ia, chlorine, pH, solids determinations BOD, and other related quality tests.
  • Be aware of safety hazards connected with water treatment and distribution and wastewater treatment and collection.
  • Unload, store, and use various chemicals such as caustic soda and chlorine.
  • Respond to chemical emergencies wearing appropriate personal protective equipment such as respirators and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).
  • Demonstrate continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
  • Know proper operational procedures.
  • Keep continuously informed of the best operating and maintenance practices. Participate in short courses and schools when available.
  • Regularly read periodicals related to water treatment and distribution and wastewater treatment and collection.
  • Keep superintendent advised of potential problems in operation and maintenance of the system. Know the layout of the sewer and water system and have knowledge of it's functional aspects. Maintain good public relations.
